Is Globalisation Always A Good Thing?
by Richard Cary

"Is globalisation always a good thing? This essay will argue that it has the potential to be a great thing, but only if we are able to move beyond the current model, whose basic problem is that it is unbalanced. The current model fails to balance the excessive power of global corporations with a corresponding level of global governance. It fails to acknowledge the well-documented failings of free-markets and the essential role of government in correcting this, and it fails to recognise the role of co-operation, as well as competition, in the evolution of systems." Paper on "Destructive Trade Theory"
by Emeritus Prof. Of Economics at Cornell University, Jaroslav Vanek
ocean.st.usm.edu/~Emklndnst/brussels/VANE.pdf (350kb)

Even non-economists will have heard of the much-vaunted 'Comparative Advantage Theory' of trade upon which so-called 'free trade' is based and which is almost universally adhered to by the 'Washington Consensus' and other mainstream economists. Well, now we have a thorough de-bunking of that theory by Czech-born Prof. Jaroslav Vanek, emeritus professor of economics at Cornell University, USA. Vanek's paper demonstrates the practice of Destructive Trade to be the more dominant theory behind present day 'globalisation' by which transnational corporations take advantage of cheap labour and environmental conditions in poorer countries. This paper is of immense value to the SP campaign because it provides the formally argued economic theory upon which the SP theory of destructive global competition also rests. Prof. Vanek appears in LSE Prof. Mark Blaug's book "100 Great Economists Since Keynes", Wheatsheaf Books, Brighton 1985. Prof. Vanek has kindly given his personal permission for ISPO to copy and distribute his paper.

"Reinheriting the Earth"
by Dr. Brian O'Leary PhD.
www.independence.net

This timely synthesis by a noted visionary scientist-author reveals the corruptions of and solutions for a global culture deeply troubled by pollution, greed and suppression. Many approaches are examined: scientific, ecological, philosophical, political, social, spiritual and personal. Included are a vivid chronicle of the deteriorating state of the Earth's biosphere, the latest developments in clean and renewable energy which could surely solve much of the pollution and global warming problems, and the cultural changes which must oversee the transition to a peaceful. sustainable and economically viable future. While he shares his regret that his native America leads to way in pollution, economic exploitation and militarism, it also has an opportunity to join the world community in creating a global citizens movement that would provide the needed counterveiling force against unbridled private power.

He recommends adoption and implementation of Simultaneous Policies which could lead to the formation of a global republic charged with implementing the needed changes without the traditional trappings of political self-interest.

"Seven Steps To Justice"
by Rodney Shakespeare & Peter Challen
Foreword by Peter Selby, Bishop of Worcester
Contact Peter Challen: peter@southwark.org.uk

Seven Steps to Justice is a complete re-thinking of economics, politics and religion to create a new paradigm providing:
two basic incomes for all, capital ownership for all, a proper deal for women, a solution for the Middle East and Kashmir and hope for the environment and the world.

Recording a sparkling dialogue between people of good faith reacting to the events of 11th September 2001 and hearing the global cry for social and economic justice, the book interprets and enhances contemporary debate of concerned people everywhere.

The authors generate an extraordinary vision of a universal justice, wholly practical, radical and new, for a world desperately in need of leadership. This new paradigm strikes at the heart of usury.

"They make simple, readable and understandable subjects which others manage to make complicated and impenetrable."
-- John Bunzl

Cooperative Capitalism: A Blueprint for Global Peace and Prosperity
www.ccus.info/books/cc/

From the Introduction to this free online book:
Superior rights for the few and inferior rights for many are structured into the subtle monopolization of land, technology, and money; all produced by nature or social technology and properly belonging to all. The unearned wealth from the subtle monopolization of those enclosed commons both reduces the efficiency of an economy and lowers the share of wealth for others. Having been born and raised within the current residual-feudal exclusive legal structure and taught with sincerity-by those who learned those fables right in the university that this is the most efficient economy-we are unaware that these highly inefficient subtle monopolies even exist.

POWER: An Independent Inquiry into Britain's Democracy
www.powerinquiry.org

Fewer of us feel that using our vote will make a difference or that our representatives can be trusted to wield power in our names.

We seem to be entering an era of permanent political disaffection and mistrust, where the gap between citizens and political power is getting ever wider. And yet, beyond the ballot box, many of us continue to feel passionately about the issues that affect our lives and the lives of others. This growing disconnection between the governors and the governed threatens to undermine the vitality and legitimacy of Britain's Democracy.

The POWER Inquiry has been set up to explore, through public engagement, research and a high profile commission, the causes of our disillusionment and to examine new approaches to political participation. POWER will act as a forum for the best available thinking on the sources of political disaffection and will host debate and discussion across the country, to find the best available solutions to this complex and pressing problem.l
